A Few Photographs Taken on the Underground

“I’ll take some photographs on the underground” I thought, “that should be fun!” Yes a great idea, inspired by travelling home on the underground with my cameras and taking these photographs at Embankment station.

I especially like the following photograph as I could hear both someone behind me as I was descending the stairs, heading towards the platform, and the train approaching. In my head I thought it would be great to get a photograph of the person stationary on the platform with the blurred motion of the train pulling into the platform, and frantically adjusted my camera settings to give a slow shutter speed.

Although it may look like it was staged it definitely wasn’t. I couldn’t have asked for someone with brighter or more vibrant colours, and she stood stock still, giving me enough time to take 3 or 4 photographs, this one being my favourite.
Deciding I’d spent enough time at Embankment I boarded a train and headed to Clapham North, one of only two Underground stations where the platform is shared by both north & southbound trains. Feeling rather confident I sat and waited for trains to arrive, finally taking the following photograph, again with a combination of movement and still life.

I didn’t have the patience to wait for two trains to arrive!

Getting back to the original thought “I’ll take some photographs on the underground, how hard can it be?” There were a few things I didn’t account for, taking the wrong equipment, not wearing my glasses and running out of time. All underground journeys are timed, if you exceed this time you pay the maximum fare, which is equivalent to not tapping your Oyster card when leaving a station. Naively I thought a 35mm lens would be wide enough, which it wasn’t and not having my glasses with me meant I couldn’t read the announcement boards so wouldn’t know when a train would be arriving – all rookie mistakes! Still I made my way to Baker Street station and took the following images.

The Circle and Hammersmith & City lines share the same iconic platforms at Baker Street so naturally I photographed them, getting both static images

and through luck, rather than good judgement some images with motion blur, this one being the best.

At this point time was against me so I started to head home. En route I couldn’t help taking the following photographs knowing full well I was just taking the same photograph again and again!

Next time I’ll take wider lenses with me in addition to my glasses, hopefully I’ll do better!
