Extinction Rebellion Protest at Oxford Circus – Day I

The Extinction Rebellion have set up camp at Oxford Circus today. Demonstrators started arriving from 1030 and started to occupy the roads around from 1100.

Buses and general traffic has been diverted away from Oxford Circus, however if approaching from Regent Street it’s not clear the junction is closed until you reach Maddox Street.

I spoke to a couple of policemen standing by who said there wasn’t much they could do as protesting was allowed. It could be seen that they’re causing an offence by blocking the public highway though. Apparently they’re intending to remain in Oxford Circus ’til 1900 this evening. There’s an almost carnival atmosphere with DJs playing music (loudly), facilities to cook food (vegetarian) north of Oxford Street and even toilets set up on the west side of Oxford Street, only to be used at night though! The majority of passers by are ignoring the goings on and concentrating on their shopping instead!
